Great read Matt. This makes sense now. We have a portable fake fireplace which is basically a Goldair fan heater dressed up as a fireplace. It glows beautifully. Got us through the winter in a standard uninsulated Kiwi house. Not sure how it works but its likely a glowy rotating thing simulating fire. Does the job. That inner core part of the brain, the reptilian part, is stimulated every night when fired up. I could sit there staring at it blankly for hours whilst sitting on the couch with a glass of red listening to Wilson Philips Hold On and thinking about the 1992 world cup loss to Pakistan wandering what if. Great article, Matt. Also, if anybody is struggling with fourth trimester, my wee lad absolutely loved the fake fire on the telly. It always calmed him down during the early teething / grumpy growth spurt days!
We recently moved to small town NZ and bought our first home. Having a fire place was an absolute deal breaker for me. Unfortunately it needs repairs, so... next year, I suppose. Meantime I've stocked the woodshed, which kept me warm this winter.
Have you tried a fake one in the meantime?
